new temporary addition

I have to tell all my fellow animal lovers about a cute little temporary addition to our surroundings. Starting this spring a cute little morning dove built a nest in the DW's flower pot on the railing on our front porch. I thought sure with all the in and out traffic on the front porch she would get frightened and leave. Not the case, she sucessfully hatched a pair about 6 - 8 weeks ago and she is now setting on more eggs. I leave her nest completely alone and undisturbed and she keeps coming back.

I knew it was typical for them to come back to the same place multple times in a year but this is so cute to look out every day and see her. I don't mess with her at all when she is on her eggs but after she hatched them and they had left she continued to come back of course she knows i will have food out for her. I can walk right up to her and she just sets there. I think it is the cutest little thing to see her out there in her nest. Okay so i'm a huge softie when it comes to God's little creatures, i'm a died in the wool animal lover...:B

  • Late to the party, BUT, that's a lot of "CUTES" in two paragraphs. ....:B

  • It's amazing how they figure who's out to harm them and who leaves them alone.
  • I had a pair of Wrens build a nest in my big air compressor last summer, had to use the small portable to keep from disturbing the budding parents.

My Son has Fred ( a bat that spends the winter hanging from his shop rafters, as soon as it turns warm, Fred leaves but had returned for the past 3 years. Lil Roy just leaves him alone and leaves the door cracked a bit just in case Fred wants outside.
  • We have a basket with fake plastic flowers in it hanging at end of front porch.
I have to go buy it to get to backyard, door to garage, irrigation water pump station etc. so it is an active area.

We have had a humming bird nesting in it each year for past 3 years.

A feeder is just 5 feet away.

Seen eggs in nest 2 years but never have seen hatchlings.

Smart bird. She knows a good thing when she encounters it. Enjoy.

This is sad - "Mama Duck" laid her eggs at our back door for several years, successfully raising her ducklings even with us and our dogs passing through that door within a foot of her. The UPS man even watched over her :-)

But this spring, a raccoon stole her eggs, then she got hit out on the main road. RIP, Mama Duck.

That is so sad, I hate those kind of sad stories. It's funny how we get attached to little creatures like that.

  • Sweet story.

We had a robin that built a nest above our back porch light for YEARS! It was right outside our door. It got to the point she never moved---when we went in and out and even when we had several people over sitting outside!

One year she stopped coming. I was so sad I cried. She was like a pet/member of the family.
