Did the shelter microchip him, before he left with you? If so, make sure you register the microchip. If he's not chipped, I would recommend having that done. It's no big deal having it done. The size of the needle scares people. I didn't like it when I first saw it, but I've been present when many, many dogs were microchipped, and very few of them even reacted in any small way. Some of them will get a little scab at the implantation point, but that heals quickly.
I'd get an ID tag made up with your cell phone numbers on, to wear when you are camping. Our local Walmart has a machine in, that I had tags made on the spot with our cell numbers for when we camp. I never had any made in those machines before, but they seem like decent quality and you have it in hand immediately.
Make sure you remember your proof of rabies vaccination.
Get a martingale type collar to wear on him when walking and use a 4 or 6 foot lead. I do not trust those flexi leads. (That subject is a whole can of worms) LOL
If you do get a martingale collar, take it off when he is crated. Dogs can hang themselves in a crate. I recommend the martingale collar as it prevents the dog backing out of it. If a buckle collar is too loose and something spooks the dog, they can back out of a lot of harnesses and collars before you know what's happening.
I tend to be a bit more cautious with rescue dogs. You never really know their full background, and you never know what might spook them. A trip can be ruined real fast if your pup gets away from you.
I think someone else mentioned taking him in your camper and let him get used to it before you leave. Take enough of his normal food and treats along. You don't want to have to change what he eats and have him get GI upset.
Have fun and enjoy. My dogs bring me much pleasure and I won't leave home without them. Are they work? Yep. But they are worth it.
He's a cute little guy - I hope you have many happy years with him.
