Pet Ramps for Bigger pickups

I have already been online and seen what is available so please hold that suggestion for now.

What I would like to know is does anyone have any preference for a certain type or brand and WHY?

My pickup is a Dodge 4x4 2500 and sits high, my dogs ride in the back. With the trailer hitched the ramp will need to be deployed from the side of the tailgate.

My dogs are capable of jumping out but the one is getting older and he cant jump in. It's too high.

Thanks in advance

  • Finding a commercially available ramp long enough to reach the tailgate and still have a reasonable angle may be difficult. We use a Petstep folding ramp to get our aging Golden in/out of the back seat of the F350 FX4. Works great for that. But would be a pretty stiff angle for the tailgate.
  • For my truck I made a ramp out of 3/8 plywood reinforced by 1x2 on the edge's. I put non slip tape you get at the hardware store on the surface. Works great and is light. I keep it in the back of the truck.

I bought a telescopic fiberglass ramp and it was a pain to expand and was heavy. Its been in the garage for years now.

I will not let my Collies jump anymore because of there age. Mikko broke his ankle jumping out of my blazer. I would never of thought of that happening.

The Collies ride where the back seat was, took it out and put in a wood platform. I put the ramp on the ledge of the bottom of the door and they walk up and in. It took my guidance a few times until they got the hang of it.
