Question about Glucosamine/Chondroitin

Been wondering my Summer is 5/6 years old, weighs 22pds. When she was little?? she suffered a broken leg, now she has this limp. Xrays are showing little bit of arthritis.

I'm giving her Joint Care from Fosters and Smith, directions say one chewable per 25pds.

What im wondering is, if there is any benefit to cutting chewable in half and giving it to in the morning and evenings. Or just giving it whole with her food in the mornings??

Would she gain anything by splitting it, as in less pain and stiffness!!
  • I give my current rotty this stuff. I gave it to my last rotty as well. I give the human form. It does make a difference.

Try to get the hydrochloride form and not the sulfate, it is said to be more easily absorbed by the dog.
  • Interesting. I started our little dogs on Dasuquin a few weeks ago at the suggestion of someone on this board. It contains the glu/chon combo along with a couple other supplements. Our Rosie, 13 lbs, had knee surgery a few years ago and has a metal pin in place. She started exhibiting some discomfort and restricted movement with that knee. Today, I saw her stand on her hind legs to get a better look at whatever it was I was offering her. I realized she hadn't done that for a long time. Her blood levels must have accumulated to the point where the Dasuquin made a difference. Yay! Regular glu/chon combos caused her to get the runs so that's why the Dasuquin was recommended and it seems to be helpful in that regard.
  • Thank You, I dint realize I could give her more. With it getting colder out now she seems to be a little more stiff when getting up. Hope it helps her a little.........
  • A friend has a boxer on it 1X a day and it really helps do not expect immediate results it takes a week or so to become effective.
  • CA Poppy,
Glucosamine/Chondroitin is not a pain medication. It claims to lubricate joints and provide some strengthening of bones and joints. If you take it in the morning you will feel no result. It's advantage is cumulative over time.
  • We started giving our seven year old dog one tablet in the morning and one in the evening about a month ago and she has shown noticeable improvement with her hip immobility. I do not have the brand we use available to me at the moment but it said to start her on 2 tablets a day for 4 to 6 weeks and then cut it to one tablet a day for a maintenance dose. As was stated, there is not an overdose concern so I would start with two and adjust according to results. I actually started using Glucosamine/Chondroitin a few years ago for pain in the knees and within three months was good as new. Still take two tablets a day as the doc told me I have early signs of arthritis in my spine.

Addendum: The brand we have been giving our dog is Cosequin DS. It apparently has flavor additives to make it more palapable to the dog. My dog thinks it's a treat.
  • It's almost impossible to overdose glucosamine. Most dosage schedules start at least twice the maintenance dosage for a month to six weeks then reevaluate.

I think I'd start at twice a day full tablet.

  • Interesting question. You could call their customer service line (probably on the pkg) and ask. I wonder what the half life is on that kind of product? If I knew how many hours later the pet felt the full effect, I think I would try to time it to help her morning walks.

Not sure of dose you are giving. We used the people formula at Walmart. Same thing but 1/3 the price. Price jumps when you add pet or vet to the label. The funny thing is there are more controls on people stuff. :B
