Took our soon to be 20 year old cat, Blue, to the vet yesterday because one half of her face was swollen...turned out to be a rotten tooth is her upper gums (I didn't think she had any teeth left)... ...

I totally understand you feeling this way...I did too for a long time after Bella died...even though she was in the ICU of the best teaching hospital, under the care of teams of specialists..I would ask myself over and over what if I had gotten her some other specialists...what if , what if...but the truth was, she was just too sick to be saved...just as your sweet kitty was of an age where she just would not be able to fight off a major infection or withstand any invasive procedures...you loved her, you will miss her forever..every so often in a lifetime we are lucky enough to have a special fur baby, sounds like your kitty was one of those cases.
