Generally, the number and "breed" of LGDs used increases as the predator pressure increases. The number of LGDs needed also increases with how many head of livestock you have. One dog would likely be enough here in MD for 20-30 sheep in one group. We have our ca. 100 sheep in 3 separate groups for management reasons. This puts one dog at a disadvantage. We've been talking about adding another dog and this event has accelerated the process.
Kangals and Anatolians can be among the most aggressive of the LGDs which is giving us pause to consider all of the possible issues. Kangals are one of the least bread for non working situations. Kangal and Anatolian are both used (and bred) by the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Africa to help manage human and wildlife conflict in the farming communities.
I guess we really won't know for certain until we meet each of these dogs. Both we are considering are in SW VA near a friend with whom we can stay will visiting both dogs.
