You might if you regularly had several feet of snow on the ground for months (no motorized snow plow or snow blower) and had to walk to the barn several times a day and night.
During the period when housebarns were built you would have had several horses (instead of tractors/trucks & cars), cows (personal creamery & beef), pigs (bacon & ham), chickens (eggs & fried chicken), etc.
