- dturmModeratorWe've had some of each type over the years. Now, Jill sleeps under the dinette coming out only when we stop or towards the end if we have a longer journey. Amanda, Buddy and Ginger (our first) would sit in the passenger seat and try to stay awake and watch as we went down the road. There was sometimes a competition to see who got to the seat first and Sandy rarely got to ride there :B
- FarmerjonExplorerAll 4 of our dogs ride quietly. The border collie and the Anatolian Shepherd have never been on a trip more than a couple of hours long. Our 2 Dobies have been to both ends of the country with us and understand whats going on when we start loading the camper. Once we start heading down the road they settle in and we don,t usually see them pop up unless we stop somewhere and then if we leave them in the truck they will people watch if it's a short time like a fuel stop, but if it's a longer stop they lay down and nobody knows they are there.
They are both very good at doing their business on command when we stop and we very seldom get a request from them for an unscheduled stop . - Deb_and_Ed_MExplorer III've had both. Ike was a true sightseer; but he was tall enough to sit on the couch, rest his head on the back of the seat, and watch the world go by. Jack the Cattle Dog just slept.
Jimmy is like Jack - just wants to snooze. Little Ben wants to be held, so he can see out the window.
Funny story: Ike and Jack went with us to Alaska. They've always liked cows and horses, who rated a single "bark!" as we'd pass. I think it was Stone Mtn Provincial Park where we were stopped by a herd of bison crossing the highway - and it was certainly the closest we've ever been to anything that big! Both "brave" dogs sat stonefaced - I think they weren't going to do anything to peeve the huge beasts?! - HalmfamilyExplorerDraco, our Chow Rottweiler mix, will look out the windows for about 10 minutes then squeezes his big 100 lbs onto the floor of the rear seat and sleeps. Will get up when we slow down. Sabian, out Husky mix, will ride with head out the window drooling away until she falls asleep in the seat.
Once we get close the campground they both get wound up and excited and will look out the windows. - lizzieExplorerPercy, our 15 year old Toller, has been to almost 49 states and all the Canadian Provinces. She looks around for the first hour of a trip, then flakes out until we stop. She has the "fast-pee" routine down pat but loves a leisurely saunter around the campground at the end of the day. We are lucky to still have her. lizzie
- Gretchen and Inga sleep almost the entire time we are traveling down the road. Once in a blue moon, one of them will stick their nose up front just to check in with mom and dad. :)
Our previous dog, Missy, was a wreck the whole time in the truck or car. We tried everything short of valium, but she could never, ever relax. Whine, pace, pant, etc. :p - BTPO1ExplorerBoth of ours aggressively look out the window. For me it is funny to watch the Chocolate Lab watch cows as we pass them. He is glued to them. I don't know why though. I often wonder what they are thinking as we drive along the roads.
- WrongWayRandallExplorerWhen my Husky was still alive she loved to get the "power sniff" - head out the window and eyes closed, sniffing for minutes at a time. She moved from one side to the other constantly and rarely slept. Our current dogs sleep for almost the entire trip and we know to stop when they wake up so they can take a break.
- R - Shirley4everExplorerOurs will enjoy the ride while traveling...
- brewjazExplorerOurs do a little of both.
