Remember that with better food, you don't need to feed as much b/c it's more nutrient dense and most likely, higher in calories. Also, make sure you feed the amount for what the dog should weigh, not what he currently weighs; stop all treats except green beans and carrots. Some dogs like the green beans frozen for extra crunch. I had good luck with Wellness Core Reduced Fat. It has a good protein level, but the fat is much lower than normal. I got my MIL's dog to lose half her (very obsese) body weight in 6 months using this kibble.
Exercise is critical, too. We played lots of fetch in the house and yard, went on walks, starting with around the block, and working up to 3 miles/day. Rattlesnakes - yikes! Do you have stairs in your house? I used to have a boxer that I would play fetch with up and down the stairs to my bonus room; worked pretty well in nasty weather with him. I'd throw the toy down the stairs and he'd bring it back up the stairs to me.
