One thing about "manufacturer's directions" - they are averages. Your dog will vary depending on energy level, metabolism, etc.
For example, both my dogs are 85lbs. The directions on the dog food say to feed 3-2/3 to 4-1/3 cups per day. Moose-dog needed 5-1/2 cups his first 2.5 years, then 4-1/2 cups per day until he was 5 years old because he would burn off the food so fast. Since then he has been at 3-1/2 cups. Bat-dog got 3 cups up until 3 years and since then gets 2-1/2 cups (8 years now). If I fed her what Moose-dog gets, she'd be fatter than fat. If I fed him what Bat-dog gets, I'd be arrested for animal cruelty.
Talk to your vet about the quantity of food you're feeding and the number of times a day you're feeding. It may be you need to break the meals out to more than 2 or 3 per day - giving smaller quantities each time, but evening it out more.
