Hi Farmerjon. First let me applaud you for committing to your dog....many don't. We had a diabetic Westie for many years and we finally controlled his blood sugars with Science Diet Lite. We started with W/D, but his sugars went too high too often.
We initially checked his sugars with a meter, and its good while trying to get control, but eventually we found we could tell how high his sugars were just by how much he was drinking and peeing. He didn't develope cataracts until the very end, and we lost him to severe arthritis, not any diabetes complications. Best of luck with your little one. His diabetes shouldn't get in the way of camping at all.
