Being from Canada our test numbers are different so I don't know what a good number is with the US system. With ours it is somewhere between 4-8, some say 10.
We have ours on a light food mixed with a senior type food. Both are grain free. She has had the itches before and from what we can tell it was from some of the ingredients in the food. Weather it actually was the grains I don't know but it stopped with the change in foods.
We are using a human insulin called Levemere.
Here's a conversion chart that might help you understand the numbers we are looking at. http://diabeticgourmet.com/Tools_and_Calculators/Convert_Sugar_Readings/
Our goal is getting into the hundreds so the 300's is scary, and "high" just sends us into the "Oh, no!" category. Our vet wants us to feed according to the bag, which is 6 cups a day. She's doing fine eating it. Leaves just a few, and I do mean "few", kibbles, so it seems to be the right amount. We feed twice a day, per his instructions. We voiced our concerns about the corn, but he didn't think it would matter that much. I know for humans with diabetes, corn is not a great choice because it raises the BG. They have to eat it in moderation. When it's the second and fifth ingredient on the dog food list and we're having trouble bringing down the numbers, we don't know enough to know just where to look, but we thought maybe corn would be something to consider.
We are also using a human insulin. We don't make any changes in insulin without our vets advice. He did say if we change food to inform him so he can note it in her file. It helps him keep up with what's going on along with the home testing he is having us do.
