Hi Farmerjon. First let me applaud you for committing to your dog....many don't. We had a diabetic Westie for many years and we finally controlled his blood sugars with Science Diet Lite. We started with W/D, but his sugars went too high too often.
We initially checked his sugars with a meter, and its good while trying to get control, but eventually we found we could tell how high his sugars were just by how much he was drinking and peeing. He didn't develope cataracts until the very end, and we lost him to severe arthritis, not any diabetes complications. Best of luck with your little one. His diabetes shouldn't get in the way of camping at all.
Wow! You are so encouraging. Committing to do our best for our dog was never a question. It's the outcome that has always been a question since we've never had this situation before. But you offer us hope.
We checked the ingredients in the Science Diet Lite and it looks like that may be a choice for us since corn is not the dominate ingredient. We're very early on in the "getting control" stage and we're obviously not there yet. Lots of questions and don't know enough to even know what to ask.
We're hoping she'll be under control sooner rather than later for her health's sake and also to allow us to camp with her. Right now, it's not an option. We have to work on this diabetes.
