We are on our second rodeo with diabetic dogs. Our first was an Australian Cattle Dog. She was an outside dog and went undetected until I discovered she had lost her eyesight. Vet gave her 6 months tops...he never suggested a different diet for her but we did give her twice a day shots. She lived 4 yrs 3 months.
We had come back from a hike where it had been raining and Jasmine, (our current furkid) had taken several drinks from ponding water. When we got back to the coach we noticed she appeared to by dehydrated and drank a lot. That night she urinated inside the coach! something she had never done. Suspecting a bladder or urinary infection we took her to the vet and discovered she was diabetic, fortunately in the early stages. The vet put her on Hill's Diabetic but she started to lose weight and that became a concern. She is now on Royal Canin Diabetic and doing very well. Shots of course twice a day and food is regulated at 12 hour intervals. All treats were tossed and she is only allowed certain approved treats. We do have a glucose curve done every six months but we can tell if her insulin level is haywire by her actions. In that case we have a home test kit that we use to monitor how much Novolin to give her.
We use Petsmart/Banfield as our vet and WalMart for insulin supplies. Since we are full timers it makes it much easier for supplies and testing as both companies are nationwide and their computers contain all the necessary information when needed. Also, insulin has a use by date. Be careful when you buy it and ensure you get a fresh bottle. We toss ours after 30-45 days as we found it's potency was compromised after that time. Who knows how long it sat at the pharmacy.
Good luck with your pet. With proper care and monitoring, you should have many years of enjoyment....Dennis
