Update on Jackson - The Old Man's Aches and Pains

No surprise, due to Jackson's age (recent senior boxer rescue, age ~8), but he's showing up lame after long walks and other exercise. He's not sore right after, but gets up very stiffly after a few hours rest. I took him to my vet, who agreed, after checking all his limbs, that he probably has arthritis in one front shoulder (I declined an x-ray to confirm, as it wouldn't change the treatment). We're currently managing it with Metacam and a joint supplement. We may try Adequan injections when it gets worse.

He's fitting in nicely at home, and we're so happy we rescued him. Our little westie/maltese mix still rules the roost, and Jackson makes sure he watches his step around this feisty little girl - lol! If he plays too roughly, she lets him know about it, snarling and biting his abundant jowls - ouch!! He usually approaches her butt first, hahaha!

We don't crate him often, because he gets really stressed out. We gave away the big wire crate we bought him, because he kept breaking out of it and meeting us at the door upon our return, nub wagging... We then bought a strong airline style crate, which will contain him, but we only use it when really necessary. Fortunately, he's good in the house when we leave him, although yesterday, I forgot to close our bedroom door, and it was obvious when we got home, that he'd made himself quite comfy on our bed...the big doofus!

Love this old man!

  • Thanks Renee! I love the seniors, and yes, Jackson's house trained, leash trained, etc.. He's also nice and calm, which is a miracle for a boxer - lol! Age definitely has its benefits in this situation. I'll take a few short years with a senior dog over the craziness of a puppy anyday!!
  • Beth and Joe - sounds like Jackson has a wonderful family! One of the benefits of adopting an older dog is they usually are house-trained. All ours have been rescues including the little Maltese we had. Our Maggie, a black Lab, doesn't like crates and she too greets us at the door and she too makes herself at home on the bed or sofa's while we're gone. She loves camping, so much that while our fiver was in the shop for about a month, she nearly tore the small dog door off trying to get in, so we kept her inside. Then when we brought the fiver home, she was ok. She sleeps under it during the day when we are at work! Silly dog. I know it wasn't because of the shade because we've got shade all around.
  • Pops - lol!

The supplement we currently have Jackson on is Cosequin DS plus MSM. He's on the loading dose for a few weeks, then will cut back slightly after that, according to the directions. I've also considered trying Dasequin plus MSM, as I've heard it works well, too.

When he gets up lame, he isn't just stiff, he visibly limps on the one front leg. The Metacam is helping, so we'll keep him on it for the foreseeable future.
  • Lucy has arthritis in her right front shoulder and we have her on
Cosequin DS and after about a month she has continued to improve.
She's not lame after walks anymore, I think her days of swimming have helped her also.
Sure hope Jackson feels better soon!

  • Hope he has more good days than bad. I've had great success with glucosamine and chondroitin, although that's probably what you meant for "joint supplement".
  • Our boxer is nearly 9 years old now and suffers from arthritis which would get worse after play as well. She also tends to re-injure an old muscle tear regularly. We took her to the vet when she started having difficulty climbing stairs. The vet recommended Ubavet glucosamine with omega 3 fatty acids. It comes in a liquid that goes on her food. She's been on it for over 2 years now and has shown great improvement. I used to have to help her to stand up and carry her up the stairs. She still gets a little stiff and sore sometimes after some aggressive play but it doesn't last as long and I don't have to help her up or carry her anymore. A bottle at $80 sounds expensive but it lasts about 6 months.
  • Thanks for the Jackson update. Sounds like he's making himself at home and is comfortable. Hopefully the arthritic condition will be manageable. Once again, you done good!

Btw, my Zoey is a 6 yo boxer mix, and also experiences similar stiffness after laying for a while. It does tend to work out pretty quickly though. Good luck!
