What is NexGard?

Saw this literature about a new flea control product Nexgard that is a once a month chewable beef flavored treat. Has anyone used this? Also, since I have a sheltie who is somewhat sensitive to certain vaccines (Leptospirosis) and certain Heartworm prevantatives, would he be able to take it? Dr. Doug, if you're still around, I'd appreciate your input and thoughts on this. Have used Frontline for many years with good results, but the convenience of a chewable beef flavored treat sounds intriguing.

Length of Effectiveness: Under normal conditions, the product is effective for a month. However, in cases of severe flea infestation, retreatment may be necessary earlier than four weeks. Do not retreat more often than once every seven (7) days. After flea control is attained, return to a monthly retreatment schedule.

K9 Advantix is an easy to apply, once-a-month topical treatment to protect your dogs and puppies from fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Within three to five minutes, K9 Advantix prevents biting fleas as well as kills and repels ticks and mosquitoes. One of the active ingredients in K9 Advantix, Imidacloprid, kills 98-100 percent of fleas within a period of 12 hours. K9 Advantix is still very effective after bathing or swimming without greatly hindering the treatment's effectiveness.

They kind of hedge their bets, you see that bathing or swimming don't GREATLY hinder effectiveness. I still recommend not bathing just before or bathing and swimming for a few days after application.

In really tough cases I've recommended application after 2-3 weeks, but there are a lot of factors taken into account before making that recommendation - READ I'm not recommending you do that without your vet's approval.

  • I'm hoping there is someone on this board that has been using NexGard.
I am hoping to start using it by May.

I got the info on this product at the vet the other day and I am tempted to try it.
Fleas are terrible down here, our two are on Advantix ll and it's very effective for about two and a half weeks then we start seeing a problem again.
They both swim all the time and I have to wonder if that affects it.

Not sure if it was on FrontLine or other brand, but it said no baths four days before or after application.

So yes, the swimming would have an affect.

The flyer that comes with Advantix ll states it is waterproof.
It says "it is waterproof and remains effective following a shampoo treatment, swimming or after exposure to rain or sunlight".
It does not state anywhere that you had to reframe from swimming or shampooing before or after application.
We gave up on Frontline a long time ago as it seemed to attract fleas to our dogs.

  • Oh, thank you RBak for asking this.

Never heard of the product before. And as DR. Doug said, I'll wait. Perhaps more info to come on this topic (I hope)
  • It's a new product, both flea and tick control and monthly oral administration. I have no experience with it, but it's made by Merial a company with a good history of producing safe effective products for animals.

I'm always a little cautious with new products, I like to see them in wide use before jumping on the band wagon.
