That is very effective --- but do not shoot into the air. That bullet has to come down someplace.
Many years ago my wife was walking our Pekingese on a leash when a neighbor's Doberman came into our yard and jumped him. Wife screamed, dropped the leash and thankfully backed away. I grabbed a .38 as I went out the door, got about 5-6 feet from the dogs, and fired one round into the dirt. They both immediately backed up and looked at me. I grabbed our dog and got him inside.
After putting the pistol away, I went to the neighbor's house and told him what happened, and very calmly explained that if his dog attacked mine again in my yard, I'd not be firing into the dirt. He kept his Doberman in his own yard after that.
