Whole Dog Journal

Don't know if anyone gets the Whole Dog Journal. There are two articles that caught my eye, in the newest issue that I received today. There's a 4 page article about people faking service dogs.... a topic that's been discussed on here recently.

And the other article that caught my eye is about ticks causing paralysis. I never heard of this before. But it says that if your dog is struggling - the back legs are usually the first thing to be paralyzed. The article says to check the dog for ticks and if there are any on, to remove them. The sooner you remove the tick, the better the prognosis. It says the moment the tick is removed, the dog will slowly start to improve.

I found the tick article particularly interesting, as I had never heard of immediate paralysis from a tick.

  • On the topic of ticks, here are two recent articles in Chemical & Engineering News on lyme and TBDs (in humans).

  • We had a case while I was in school, a coonhound. Sweet dog, the neuro people went over him head to toe and couldn't find a thing or a reason for his paralysis. Every day he was propped up in our treatment area and would get pets from every passing person. After about 2-3 days, one tiny tick was found and removed and the next day he was back to normal. That was a pretty impressive event.
  • It happens. I know an acupuncturist that treated a dog with that. Had them stuck between his toes. He was a golden, so having him unable to get up was not a good scene.
