Why do Dogs like to ....

All of my german shepherds loved to chase the ball. To the point that they each had their own and knew who's was who's. Heck one of them even loved it if you throw it in the pool so she could go for a swim to get it!
I also have dachshund who loves to fetch the ball.
Then again, I've had 3 others over the years that could care less.

Well, not directly related to the subject, but it is dog related!

Max loved sticks. One day, he tried to bring an entire downed tree branch onto the deck from the yard. It was funny watching him try to get the long branch past the step railings.

Pops, re: Calvin and his crows, we had a dog that would bark and bark at crows that were sitting on a fence. One of them would imitate the dog and make a barking noise back at her. I don't know what the crow was saying, but it drove the pooch nuts!

We had a member of this board, years ago, who threw a stick to his dog that was swimming in a lake. The dog grabbed the stick head on, it drove into his open throat and lacerated an artery. Dog did not survive. Sorry, really horrible story and I'm not sure how one would avoid that. It's just good to be aware, as Dr Doug says.

When you let your dog run with sticks, train them to run with the sticks across the mouth rather than sticking out the front like a cigar. I had a few cases where the stick got impaled in the jaw or soft palate when the dog stumbled or ran into something.

Had that happen once - fortunately not at speed and no injury happened, but now I will make them immediately drop it if they don't pick it up crossways.

The one dog I owned who DID get impaled, was skewered by a 10" dried weed stem that entered his foot between the toes and ran just under the skin right up the front of his leg. He was just galloping through a nice grassy field. Yep - emergency trip to the Vet for THAT one

That's easy, Pops. It's because dogs don't have hands. The real question is why grown men like to go out and throw or catch a ball for hours, while other people pay to watch this. :W

Our puppy loves to play fetch in the house but will not fetch outside. Go figure...

Many of our dogs chased sticks. It was great fun, and Amanda was the best. She kept looking for bigger sticks. It got to be funny watching her trying to bring back a log.
