Y'all bring your pets inside tonight

I prolly don't have to tell this group that, but this is my personal PSA. Domesticated animals are unable to survive in severe temperatures. Even huskies and samoyeds need protection. They are susceptible to the wind chills and even frostbite. If you have outdoor dogs at least bring them into the garage out of the bitter cold. We do that for homeless people, and we should do it for our pets.

Off my soapbox now...
  • This is not mexican weather:

    Will stay cuddled up:

    Take Care, stay warm:W!

    Markiemark:C
  • my dogs are house dogs. I lost a dog because of the cold when I was a kid and I never want to go through that again.
  • Don't think I'd sleep well ever if my dogs had to sleep outside! As a kid there was no chance out dog would come inside, we would spend a lot of time fixing the dog house up just right with blankets and a 100 watt light bulb, flap on the door and all was good. Would have been a lot easier to just bring him inside for the night.
  • I was amazed as a kid when our Husky would pant by the door to go out to it's run at ten or eleven pm when it was below zero-out she'd go and into her dog house-I'd trudge out to close the gate-she was welcome to stay in but opted to be outside!

I'm pretty impressed with some of the newer dog houses that have double walls and the flap over the door-sized right a dog can stay very warm in one of them with nothing but body heat-that said I think it's important to up the calorie intake of any animals that are outside in the stuff.

My dumb mutt would rather run around outside when it's frigid than stay in-although she does get to a point that she heads for the door and is ready to be inside!
  • My Jake is snuggled up against me-with a blanket over him. Jesse is on the floor not far away. Both love the cold weather but outside time varies based on weather conditions, be it hot or cold. Jesse would stay out all day if we let him, but Jake isn't as tolerant.
  • Our dog Jake is a sissy house dog. However neighbors leave their dog out 24/7 365 in NW WY. 20 to 30 below. Doesn't seem to hurt their dog.
  • Thanks for the PSA. We have a neighbor whose dogs were out all day, but seem to have been moved before dark...at least I hope so. It is currently -10 right now here.
  • Thanks for the reminder. Mine are very domesticated so they stay in more than out.

I live in the country and it amazes me that animals can survive in this brutal weather, currently 8 degrees, this is unusually cold for my area. We put scraps of food out for the numerous wild animals that live around us, they seem to like the deer block that we put out. The deer block is visited by deer, raccoon, possum, squirrel and many birds.

Please take care of the pets!
  • I can't bring my 3 cats in the house proper, but have them set up in an unheated porch area with a fiberfilled comforter and a heat lamp. They're siblings, so they all curl up next to each other and seem quite content. Food, water, litterbox all nearby. Hate to think of any "pets" that are left outside in this.
