A Different Kind Of TV Antenna

I have a Winegard Omni Directional antenna that I am going to replace. As I started looking around I came across some house type motorized units. I currently have a shaft mounted to the roof of the RV and it looks like this would fit on the existing shaft. It's powered through the coax the Winegard is powered through the coax? It's also has remote control. I would prefer a radio type remote instead of infared and a control box but have not really looked that hard yet.

Yes, it's different looking but not really that big.

Just wondering if anyone has tried anything like this?

  • These things are all over the place in Quartzsite (not on RV's). The pix i saw from Yuma were consistantly solid but was never able to do a side by side with a Batwing, but its probably better than the Bat.
  • Two years ago when we were about 60 miles from the nearest OTA towers, an area flea market was selling the Lava antennas by the bunch. A week or so later, there were at least four of them in the dumpster at our RV park. Very cheaply made, and apparently didn't work all that well either. We were able to get two of the big three networks plus PBS with our Sensar III plus Wingman and our SensarPro setup. With the Orlando locals on Dish though, we really didn't need them OTA.
  • I have one of those antennas, but I only paid $28 for it on Amazon about a year ago. I never used it on the rv, but it seems to work really well inside my house. I live near Youngstown, and pick up the Pittsburgh stations about 65 miles away just fine. I really only use it when the local stations are carrying Cleveland football and I want to watch the Steelers.

That looks like a very good antenna, at least on paper.. You do need to be able to lower and raise it for best operation.. But ...

The mount used in the photo above this post is a good job, Easily designed and mounted,, You can mount the motorized antenna so that when the rotor on the antenna points NORTH it is pointing in the same direction as the arrow on the dial inside then you can start by raising the antenna and pointing it NORTH, then rotate the unit using it's motor to get best signal.

That is about the only antenna Ive seen yet that I woudl consider over a Sensar IV.
  • did something similar on a previous RV, about 7yrs ago

i mounted it to the mast from the batwing that had broken when i hit a tree

how about using a telescoping pole (think flagpole) or PVC sections to create a mast and using that to support the antenna?

Don't forget you have 12VDC on the COAX that was feeding your WINEGARD antenna providing power for its internal pre-amp. This is applied when you push the the button on the WINEGARD Antenna Wall Plate.

Hope all is compatible with your RG antenna cable setup

You new antenna looks like the ones that HEARTLAND CATALOG sells... Everyone I ever saw was cheap construction...

I find it hard to replace the good ole BATWING Antenna with UHF dipoles mounted on it...

Looks like this one on Google images
