- 8_1_VanExplorerFor $139 you could get the better ASUS 32GB Google Nexus 7" Tablet with 4G and free expedited shipping from B&H. And if you live outside of NY state you don't pay sales tax.
The 32GB Google Nexus 7" Tablet from ASUS represents a premium Android-based device that delivers the best Google experience available on a tablet. Aside from including easy-to-use software and state-of-the-art hardware, the Nexus 7 is the first tablet to ever feature Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. Jelly Bean brings intuitive controls and a plethora of customizable options. With smarter notifications, beautiful new widgets and home screen customization, the Nexus 7 takes advantage of Jelly Bean's easy to use drag-and-drop controls.
Finding that perfect balance between practicality and mobility is a difficult task. Fortunately, the Nexus 7 combines both into a slim, lightweight tablet with a perfectly-sized 7" IPS display, Wi-Fi wireless connectivity and 4G mobile broadband for accessing the Internet from anywhere. Plus, with a 1280 x 800 native resolution, you'll be able to enjoy deeper black levels and vibrant color when playing your high-definition video content. The screen is made of scratch-resistant Corning glass so you don't end up with unwanted marks when carrying your Nexus 7 around.
Mobility is key for any tablet and the Nexus 7 is no exception. It is only 0.41" thin and weighs less than a pound so you can carry it around with you wherever you go without adding any bulk to your bag. You don't have to worry about low battery life either since the Nexus 7 can run up to 9.5 hours during HD video playback. Actual battery life may vary with use. 9.5 hours was achieved by playing a 720p video at 100 nits brightness with an external headset, Wi-Fi turned on and logged into Gmail.

Hmm.. isn't "4G" a cellphone/internet connection?
OP wasn't looking for "4G" CELLPHONE internet connectivity if they were looking at the ARRP tablet.. Although I guess it may be possible to bypass or ignore the "4g" data modem as long as it has built in WiFi radio..
But still not sure if it would be a better deal than a Acer Iconia since the Acer does have a 7.9" screen and built in GPS radio which does not depend on Internet connection to work. - strollinExplorer

The model of the Nexus 7 that 8.1 Van linked to is the 2012 version, the 2013 version has a faster processor, more RAM, higher resolution screen and has front/rear cameras as opposed to just a front camera on the 2012. Regardless, both versions have built-in GPS and are generally ranked as better tablets than the Acer Iconia. The Acer does have a microSD card slot which the Nexus 7 lacks.
The OP may not want the 4G (which requires a cellular subscription) but the tablet could still be used without the 4G on just wifi. - GdetrailerExplorer III

No micro SD card slot?
Pretty much makes the Nexus worthless to use as a Wifi Tablet..
Transferring/copying data via Wifi is painfully slow although I guess you could plug the tablet into a PC via USB port but then you lose the use of the tablet while you are connected via USB..
The Acer we can simply remove the micro SD card and still be able to use the tablet..
We make a lot of use of the micro SD card, can be removed from tablet and plugged into a PC with a card reader to transfer/move/backup files on the card plus can swap cards for basically infinite storage.. So if one card gets full we can simply plug in a different card and go about life once again..
Heck I even have put scanned in maps and directions to our favorite places on to a micro SD card that would never been able to fit on the Nexus..
Acer Iconia also has a larger screen than the Nexus (that small .9" difference is amazing). - strollinExplorerWorthless as a wifi only tablet? Why would the lack of a SD card slot make a tablet worthless in any way, shape or form? Way to exaggerate the importance of an SD card slot.
I simply use an OTG thumb drive with my Nexus 7, or a wireless hdd or can also use cloud storage. I also have one of these: Micro SD card reader for Android. However, with 32G of on-board storage, I need very little additional storage. If my Nexus 7 had an SD card slot it wouldn't go to waste but the lack of one isn't a show stopper either.
I'm not sure which model of the Iconia you have but it may have only a dual core processor compared to the N7's quad core. It may have a larger screen but lower resolution. 16G storage vs 32G storage, 1G RAM vs 2G RAM. Lots of pluses on the N7 side to make up for the lack of an SD card slot.
Here's a summary of a C|Net review of the Iconia A1-810 with 7.9" screen:
The Good The Acer Iconia A1-810 has a low price, runs the latest version of Android 4.2, and includes an expandable storage option and a Micro-HDMI port.
The Bad The tablet is thicker and heavier than other small tablets and uncomfortable to hold in one hand. Its screen could be brighter, and the front-facing camera takes washed-out, blurry photos.
The Bottom Line The Acer Iconia A1-810 goes low on price, but the Google Nexus 7 costs about the same and is still the tablet to get with its sharper screen and more comfortable build. - 8_1_VanExplorerIf you need MicroSDXC Expansion up to 64GB then here is a 7" tablet for $79.99.

B&H - covetsthesunExplorerWell, I certainly do have a lot to mull. I'm the OP. What I'm looking for is: check email, find hotels & eateries while travelling home and elsewhere, surf the web. I'd like to keep in touch with gkids either skype or face time. They have mini iPads, but I'm not letting that influence my decision. They also have other options inhouse.
I'm probably going to use it for checking finances etc while out of town as well. I've never had one... and I've never had a smart phone either. So...just starting the explorations.
Thanks

In Alabama, and I'm sure in most other states you are supposed to claim, on your income tax return, all of your out-of-state purchases for which you were charged no sales tax. You have to pay up at years-end unless you are dishonest and don't declare your purchases.
Only residents of Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana and Oregon can honestly avoid the sin.;)
