Common misconception: Smart Phone GPS require cell service or WiFi to operate. Not true the GPS chip works all the time on or off the network. It's just that when your off the network your device can't download the map data. For these times it's best to use an offline GPS app like: CoPilot or Sygic. These install all the map data to the device so they work all the time.

I have a GPS ( Nav Free ) but I was wanting a altitude readout as another tool. I think I will look at Co pilot and Sygic . thanks
