another cell change on data

Just saw a commercial for Straighttalk. They are now offering unlimited data at 4G speed on their cellphone service for $55 a month. Video is limited to SD quality, Verizon towers.
From experience, don't buy a phone from them, get an unlocked phone from a manufacturer direct or from Amazon.
Straight talk, Trac fone, Total Wireless all disable mobile hotspot and tethering on the phones they sell, but if you bring a phone from another source, those functions still work even if you need a sim card.
  • I did the T Mobile buy one get one free(BOGO) deal. Two smart phones unlimited everything flat 60 bucks per month no fees. I brought my existing phone in, bought two Galaxy S8's, gave one to the DW, and sold the other to my sister at a discount. Then got a $930 dollar pre-loaded Master Card from T Mobile. Overall I'm up $500, and my Verizon bill use to be $160, so I'm saving $100 per month. I know T mobile doesn't have the good fringe coverage that Verizon has, but that's rarely a problem for me.
  • Before the Advent of large screen smart phones and their data usage
    It was simple math
Using the internet with a PC, used a lot more data than web browsing on a small screen phone

With the current trend too 'stream' TV , movies, sports events
In HD resolution, tethering a PC uses lots of data

    So the no tether policy
  • I called Straight Talk and was told the same thing. The Straight Talk agent said they will "freeze" my account if I'm found tethering with my phone. I asked why and was told it was a violation of their user policy. Which didn't tell me why....My phone is a straight talk phone that doesn't have the Hotspot icon anyway and it's 2 years old so when it dies I'm going to shop around and find an outfit that isn't so restrictive.

I get Unlimited data (4glte where available) to my phone, plus unlimited talk and text 55/month.. ANd for another 5 bucks 10 Gig of hot spot BEFORE throttling on hot spot data only, and unlimited throttled (About the same as park wi-fi if I"m the only user). Total bill (2 lines tax included plus a bit of hardware cost 87 Bucks/month. T-Mobile 55+ plan you must be 55 or older to qualify
  • I have an I phone from ST.. I phone se.. It has the option but it does not work... Says to call, or activate through website. I called and they said its against the terms and policies to tether.. They will cancel your plan if caught...

Im not sure why they dont allow this...

I also read the 55 unlimited is like 32 gigs... They they reduce speeds to 2 g.. I myself am on the $30 2 gig plans for my wife and I. Neither of us use 2 gigs per month.. So two phones comes to $72 a mont...

We had the 45$ plans @ 10 or 12 gigs but we never used all those gigs..

Yes it would be nice if they allowed tethering...
  • its an LG L64VL - we looked at 2- both had the hot spot, this is the one we decided to get. make sure they do have a hot spot if you get one.
