We have a family plan for our cell phones, with unlimited data through Verizon. Both my dd and myself need new phones and went to the store the other day to see what's out there. Turns out if we buy new phones we can't keep our "grandfathered" unlimited data plans. We have to give it up and buy 2GB for $29 a month. Same price but only 2gb. :EI am really upset with this.:M Oh they did say we can keep our current plan if we pay full price for our phones....has anyone else encountered this?

Yes. We never use very much of our time and it's still very expensive. We bought a hotspot and went on vacation but it never charged. I took it back and said I didn't want it. Still got charged $35' for activation...but Verizon does have good service.

The answer is somewhat easy. Sacrifice one of the phone lines to the limited data plan. When you goto Verizon or Best Buy, do not upgrade your phone line. Upgrade a different line we'll call line 3. When line 3 is upgraded at the subsidized price, transfer the new phone to line 1. Then upgrade line 3 again and transfer the second new phone to line 2. Two new phones at the lower rate and maintain your unlimited data.

How much data are you currently using? I was using less than 1gb on my own but we wanted to add 3 more iPhones and share data so we chose the 4gb plan.
We are always a little nervous about going over but haven't yet. In fact I just looked at our usage over the last 6 months and our average is 1.8gb per month.

I wasn't pleased with the loss of my unlimited data plan but I am now up to 5 phones on my plan and I feel like what I'm paying is fair for 5 phones.

Oh well, you have choices. Keep the old plan and the old phones or upgrade the phones and data plans.

That is how it is. No major carrier has new unlimited data plans to my knowledge.

old news. VZW announced that at least a year or more ago. i'm fairly certain you can buy a phone elsewhere...say from eBay...and activate it on your plan and keep your unlimited data.

See my previous post, this thread to keep your unlimited data. I know someone who did exactly what I recommended three weeks ago at a corporate Vzw store.

If Sprint has good service where you live they have true unlimited. See their latest advertising for the new MotoX.

I'm pretty sure you use your phones data plan when using PdaNet or Foxfi. My plan is good. I have 4 family members on it, 3 with unlimited data for $30, 1 with 4gb for $30 and unlimited text, plus all are insured and with taxes and everything it's about $240 a month. Not many minutes=1400 shared but we don't use it much and mostly other Verizon customers is who we call. Unfortunately Verizon has the best coverage here.
