Witched late last year from Verizon to save money on tv and internet and phone.Well I tried to use 4 today to get phone number for a friend. All I got was city and state and name of the business you want and.....Then on another try or two for residence say residence.After saying residence say the name of the business you want again and again. It gave a number in a different part of the state for some business. then is this the number you want and I said no. and .....What is the nae of the business you want.Tried calling the Operator Sorry we did not recognize, your.. whatever. This is an automated system.Tried again and recording said if this is a dial phone dial oo for an Operator, then sorry we didn't recognize your response. Please hang up and try againPlease hang up and dial againWent to AT&T store. We no longer have the Real Yellow Pages.We no longer have directories. You can go to the library and look in one of the old directories.You can go on the Internet and find the number you want. Sure can for 4.95 or 19.95 subscription for a year, on the internet. I supposed I could hook up to the Internet with the phone but I don't want to. Each marketing message cost money above our unlimited rate, i think I understand. If I do want a business it is a two dollar and something charge for the number.

Perhaps your friend is on Facebook.

You can go to whitepages.com, put in your friends name, and you will get a list of people you can narrow down by location and age range. It's easier than a phone book with tiny print. Then write down the number and call. You don't have to look it up on the phone.

Verizon still has free live operators ? I didn't think they had been around for years, the operators that is (besides the pay per call ones) Nowadays if you decide to go without a internet connection to the phone to "google".. look up someone would have a hard time if they weren't by the home computer.The OP doesnt want internet on the phone (kinda like not having a home phone, period ! was 20 years ago)But since they are on the forum somehow they at least can get the info online when at the computer Just like the old phone book.

Yes, we only make a couple trips a year now. Headed out for about a month shortly.Looking on the Internet is 4.95 per lookup or from 19.95 up subscription per year.I could put the Internet on the phone. Everyone's Information is up for sale under new deregulation.We average thee calls a day from unknown and one or two wanting to sell us something, or a survey. The Do Not Call list isn't worth much now.But I'm digressing. We have all the numbers of friends and relatives except for a hand full that have changed circumstances.My 411 call was for them. A little bit ago I did find what I think was the listing on a free site.I'm not hip to spending a half day trying to find someone's phone number or paying two to three dollars for a business number. Business has all our information, every dot and title now but I can't find a number of a friend?

White pages might be helpful if your friend has a land line. Not so much if he has cell service

Verizon has Operators. Seems like half the time the automated system
didn't respond correctly and had to ask for Operator.
I was speaking of land lines and cell/smart phone service.
Put internet on cell phone, simply meant using it.
Don't need to with laptops. have used it sometimes.
And since when and am I the subject on'there?
As far as don/t rv much, how much dds it take to count?
We spend about 20k a year on Rv is that enough?

We've had good luck using 1-800-FREE411 (1-800-373-3411) for both residential and business numbers. You'll hear a brief ad before and after your request, but we've found it handy when Internet service is not available or convenient to use at the time.

Technology has made it possible for businesses to monetize many things that used to be "free". This isn't necessarily bad, because all those "free" things weren't really free. The price of the services that included those "free" items were just set to include those costs. I like things to be a la carte. That way I pay for what I want and use and don't pay for things I don't.

I do not know of any cell phone service that has live operators.
Yellow pages practically extinct because most business will not advertise on them anymore. Most ads internet and TV. That is also hurrying the demise of newspapers.
White pages might be helpful if your friend has a land line. Not so much if he has cell service
