Directories?

I found the various web sites for Corps of Engineers and National Parks, but I'd really like to have a directory of all that I could just download and keep on my laptop rather than having to log into the web site that might not always be available to me.

Anyone know of a way to get these?
  • I have RV parking.com app on my phone. It shows them on a map and you can click on each park to get information.
  • I go to POIFactory and download the csv file of campground for the US. This is then imported to my Streets and Trips and then I have it on my laptop. Doesn't have all the data but does have enough so I can see if I want to look that campground up in the paper copy.
  • One of the problems with trying to publish a directory of recreational facilities on CoE managed waterways is that availability and usability information changes frequently, either seasonally or in response to weather.

Most of these properties are for flood control, to maintain navigable waterways. Because recreational users are most often there to be near the water, many of the facilities will be closed when a reservoir or section of a river is at flood stage.

We used to have to call the District Office to find out whether a campground was open, now we can usually check it online. But you can't really cover availability by putting dates into a directory, that works only for seasons, not for events.

One of my topo maps, don't remember whether Garmin or DeLorme, has locations of most of the camping facilities in the digital database, but if I am planning to go to a particular campground, I still need to check online, or call, to see if it is open. I've shown up at a reservoir without checking, to find that three of the four campgrounds were temporarily closed by flooding, but was lucky enough to find a vacant unreserved site for the night, because it was mid-week.

For the smaller subset of CoE campgrounds in the recreation.gov reservation systems, if a CG, or even part of a CG, the sites temporarily closed will just show up as not available to reserve (or will look like they are reserved). But that won't tell you whether or not the whole CG is closed, or whether walk-up sites are available, because those are not in the reservations system.
  • There is a book that might still be in print for COE parks. Have it but find that CGs shown on MS Streets & Trips covers almost everything.
  • I created a binder with all of our state parks, COE etc. that we frequent with a map of each. I make note of our favorite sites and then when I make reservations it's pretty easy to know which site I want.

This wouldn't work if you are travelling across country and are looking specifically for COE parks unless you know your route and can print out those parks that you plan on going to.

If you have mapping software you may find what you want on the discovery owner's website http://www.discoveryowners.com/cginfo.htm

I did not check to see if COE was one of the files but they have map overlay files and data import files for most major mapping programs with all sorts of filters on them.
  • you can use www.woodalls.com online and it's usually up and running. It's the only one I use other than www.rvparkreviews.com
Trailer Life and Woodalls no longer puts their directory on CD. Not sure of any that you can download. I bet it would be a huge file!
