My no-kids-allowed desktop PC was running trusty reliable Windows XP until March. I decided to upgrade to Windows 8 and I've always wanted an SSD. So I bought both, installed fresh Win8 on new SSD, and use my old HDD for storage. I downloaded and installed the latest copy of iTunes and pointed the path for my data to the appropriate location on old drive.
Since you have a need to format this hard drive now, you may with to take a similar approach separating the operating system from your programs and data on two drives.
I understand your approach of separating and directing "new" data to a specific location on HD(s) but how did you get the "existing" data back into ITunes at that location?? Also I'm still trying to determine if I can identify a data file that is specific to data only, or is the data just integrated into some obscure IPhone file. Hope I'm making myself clear.
Lots of good ideas in this thread but I am only concerned with copying IPhone data, no music on the Iphone, and digital photos are already transferred to computer, so now concern about restoring them.
