Might look into Consumer Cellular. They use AT&T network, good coverage just about anywhere. If your wife IPhone is on AT&T, then talking between your phone and hers should not cost anything or use any minutes. No contract, just about any AT&T phone will work on their system. Plans range from $10 month and up. We use the $15 month plan and no issues.
Have had them for about a year now and everything has gone great. From changing carriers initially, to answering questions, to helping with phone set-up. Calls always answered promptly, friendly and they seem to know what they are talking about.
