Bing vs Google Maps

Right now, I have all our maps on Google maps. I show favorite restaurants, diesel stops, RV parks, etc on my personal maps pages (prefer that to GPS). But I have just been looking at Bing maps and think it might be better, more features, etc. What do you think?

It would be a lot of work to transfer all my personal maps to Bing, but us old folks have a lot of time.:)
  • When I was looking on Bing and Google, I seem to be finding more up to date satellite views on Google than on Bing. What I can recall seeing on Google a couple years back, I was seeing on Bing, when I knew that the Google map was newer, and showing things like a newly installed road, or at my house my dune buggy in one shot, and on Bing the old van I drove before buying my dune buggy.

I also see my sister's old van, not her new car in the Bing pictures, that must have been taken in 2007 or 2008, while the Google maps in her area show a new shopping center, not found on Bing.

Also while looking up a house on Bing, I saw bare ground, while the google shot showed the house built in 2009. This was in Gresham Oregon.

ALso if you know of new road construction in a area, look at both Google and Bing, and see what site shows the most current construction.

  • I was just looking in Santee California. If you look at the south side of Santee, highway 52 was just constructd there. And opened about 2 years and 4 months ago. On google, they show some signs of construction on the further out pictures, and up close clearly show the freeway.

When I looked up the same pictures of highway 52 on Bing, it clearly shows buildings where the freeway has been for the past 2 years, and no signs of the bridges being started, or foundations for such a bridge started.

And I know that Cal Trans was working on the project since I moved to that area, back in 2009. I have a feeling that those Bing pictures are from 2008 or earlier. At least Bing shows highway 52 on the maps, just not the pictures.

  • I was looking at another area, 5086 South Power Road
Gilbert, AZ 85212, where I installed a ice machine back in July of 2008, when I lived there. In the Google maps, it shows the place, that was constructed in 2008. In Bing maps, no place, but shows vacant land where it was to be built. Not until you zoom in all the way, then you can see the Texas Roadhouse.

So I keep finding that most of the bing maps I look at are a bit outdated. The 202 loop and I10 is not shown very well on Bing, while the freeway has been completed since 2008. Google pictures show the cars on the freeway, Bing shows bare ground, or no freeway where there has been one for about 5 years.

  • I am finding that either one may have updated info depending on where I look.
I like the bing 'birds eye view in many cases, but sometimes the up close images are not as clear as google.
Seems there are pros and cons to both.

I do use google maps for navigation on my android phone, so I think that helps make my decision to stick with google for now.
  • I generally use google maps (and street view/sat view/google earth), but one thing I like about Bing (and Mapquest) is that they show toll roads in green so that you can easily see where you might encounter a toll road. Wish google would to that.
Fortunately I do not travel where there are toll roads very often.
  • For me Mapquest was the most up to date. I'm building a new house and put address into both Google and Mapquest, neither could find it with a search. I zoomed in on the area where my house will be and on Google the map was behind by two phases of expanding the sub-division. On Mapquest it was only one phase behind. My street was actually shown on Mapquest and labled even though a search could not find it.
  • I like Birsdeye in Bing and Street view in Google. Both give you some insight as to parking or entrance driveways. I have found that zooming into either will sometimes give you an updated view that is not shown in the previous pre-zoom. You see a vacant lot in a zoom out and a new building after zooming in.
  • I have always used Google but when the police were trying to get the Boston bomber out of the boat I tried pulling the address on Google and could not get a good view. When I tried Bing you could really zero in on the boat and later learned that Bing was the one all the news services were getting their views from. My own house, Google has a more recent version.
  • Mapquest or Google for me. I cannot stand bing especially as a search engine.
  • Can anyone point me in a direction to learn how to use google maps?

I made a map for a trip with about 2 dozen location markers and then save it. I like how you can drag and drop to change the order of locations and how it updates the route (in blue).

I spent about 2 hours on that map and saved it. I came back this morning to edit and add locations, and it doesn't use the same cool interface. It seems very particular when you try to edit existing maps. Any tips?
