blocking phone numbers

Verizon allows me to block up to 20 calls, but sometimes that isn't enough. I pay $5 extra per month for the privilege. When I get excess robocalls, I simply add them to my contact list and set the ring tone to "no ring". It's not perfect since I still hear my phone identifying the number, but at least it won't ring.

These robocallers should realize that they're wasting their time with most people, since who'd want to buy a product from such a rude and intrusive company. But then, I guess there are enough gullible people out there who make the robocaller's time worthwhile. :h

I've got an app that blocks all calls and text unless sender is on my contacts list. It's "Whoscall" on android.

We use NoMoRobo on our AT&T Homebase VOIP phone service, and the Call Control app on our smart phones. Both are very effective in stopping telemarketers, and Call Control will even block political calls.

I use Callcentric VOIP at home. I have it set to only ring my phone for phone numbers in my number list. Calls from other numbers get referred to voice mail and may leave a message IF the caller presses the correct number (eliminates robo callers). I get notified when I get a new voice mail, and can choose to return the call or not.

The default ringtone on my iPhone is set to "sonar". As I build my contact list each number is assigned a different ringtone depending on who they are - family, friends, business contact, etc. People who don't leave a voicemail don't get into my contacts.

When I hear "sonar" I usually ignore the call but I may decide to answer out of curiosity, or I may answer if I'm expecting a call. I might also call back later to identify them - my phone, my option.

Now I'm starting to get junk text messages - not sure how to handle that traffic yet.

In many cases the number displayed is NOT the caller's number at all, but a phoney. IF, and I stress IF you can trace the call. You can bill 'em ($500.00) but alas. They are good at keeping you from doing that.

I'll be getting an app soon that can block whole exchanges. There are robocallers who call me frequently and they spoof numbers that are in your home exchange. Useless to block the number, because next time it's a different number. And the numbers don't work if you call them back.

FCC needs to get tough and enforce the laws. Personally I say make robo calling a capital crime.

I also vote for NoMoRobo, it works very well. We have it on our landline and it easily blocks 5-10 numbers every day. A few still sneak through, but nothing like it was before.

Everybody I want to talk to is on my contacts list, so a name comes up when a call comes through. If the phone displays only a number, I don't answer it. If it is important and a legit call, they'll leave a message and I'll call them back. Otherwise, I ignore it.
