Blocking Videos

Is it possible to block videos from appearing when you access a news story? I'm trying to conserve data usage.
  • I too have to conserve data.....I have found that the Opera browser uses much less data than Firefox, Chrome etc......also have the video shut off unless asked....just sayin
  • Does hitting the STOP button on the video prevent further data useage or does it continue to stream and download in the background?
  • Websites are getting smart concerning Flash blocking extensions, so moving toward embedded HTML5 video which most all current browsers support. Not to mention, more difficult to defeat than Flash.
  • No need to add anything extra - in Firefox go to Add Ons then Plug Ins. Go down the list and look for Shockwave Flash and Shockwave for Director (if you have that) and just set them to "Ask to Activate". Then when flash element is on a webpage you will get a dialog asking if you want to activate flash - ignore that or click no and no videos will play. When you want Flash to play just answer activate and it plays normally.
  • Not all embedded videos these days are Flash based.

If using Firefox, you can download Flashblock extension, which stops both Flash and HTML5 embedded videos.
  • X2
    on NoScript
that will stop most videos, you will have to click and give permission for them to play

    Try NoScript..

Many videos (and Ads) use JavaScripts to start them, NoScript will block ALL JavaScripts from running until YOU allow them to run.

Can be a bit of a pain to deal with since some legit websites may require JavaScripts to run.. For those you will have to trial and error a bit to figure out which scripts need to run..
  • You don't say what operating system or browser you're using, but on some (such as Chrome on a PC), you can turn off plug-ins and video clips will only run with you right-click on them and run them manually.
