Aside from the shutter lag that may be the result of the camera's design, the speed of your memory card had a lot to do also with shutter lag. Make sure you have a Class 10 SD card in the camera or you will miss a lot of shots as it saves each photo to the card.
Check the reviews online of cameras. Shutter lag is always a criteria in a professional review - whether DSLR or Point and Shoots.
If you really want to end shutter lag altogether, get a DSLR with continuous shooting. Hold your finger on the button and click, click, click. My Canon T2i (new model is now T5i) does this flawlessly.
