Don't be afraid to look at used DSLR cameras - given the frequency that the companies 'redesign' the cameras, used ones sell at a huge discount off new.
As an example, I am a Nikon owner with a significant investment in their lenses etc and recently I picked up a couple of professional D1X bodies for less than $100 each - they sold new in 2002 for nearly $5000. These are 5 MP cameras (more than sufficient for web/computer photography and are built tough and do everything that the professional photographer demanded 10 years ago. Instant on, very low lag, waterproof etc.
They are heavy and wouldn't suit everyone but there are a whole raft of pro and semi-pro bodies out there at a fraction of their original prices that are perfectly usable today.
You don't HAVE to have the latest and greatest to take good photos :)
