Campground tv hookup

I'm trying to understand the process in hooking up to campground provided tv. Is all I need a coax from the campground connection to the outside connection on the rv then set the tv to cable? What else am I missing.?

Thanks.

  • Thanks to everyone for all the great information. Our RV is a 2004 Born Free. It has a crank up roof antenna and a booster on/off switch and display light when booster is on. That switch also controls the tv input source. With the tips you have given I feel ready to make it work.

I should explain that it will be a few months before that happens. I am up here in the tundra of Minnesota and it's not exactly camping season. However, we are having a warm spell, above 32 degrees F, and when that happens it's hard not to walk back to the shed and rub up against the RV. One thing leads to another and pretty soon I'm using you kind folks to solve my tv questions. When we do get out I will follow up on this thread with my experiences.
  • It used to be you just plugged in, turned on the tv and turned off the booster. With a digital tv same process but you also have to do a channel scan on the tv. In some campgrounds you now have to get a box from them, hook it into your system and then do more stuff. I was at one campground where I hooked up the cable, but still had to use their remote that actually controlled a box located in their building. So it can be complicated.
  • It's not as simple as some might like you to believe. Depending upon the setup in your coach you will have a wall plate with a tiny button that turns a light on or off (ON you get OTA and OFF you get cable) or you might have a BOMB (Box of Many Buttons) that selects the input to your TV. If things are as simple as just changing the input at the BOMB or the wall plate you still need to change the TV input from TV (OTA) to Cable and do a new channel scan. In the worst case the campground requires that you install a cable box to work with their system.
Let us know what the campground says you need to do to watch cable TV and we can likely give you some better guidance. Also, let us know what your coach is, if you have a BOMB or not and any other details you might know of.

FYI do not stop scan while in process because maybe you forgot to turn off the antenna booster.
I did that and fried a TV. Let it finish, turn off the TV and then turn off the booster. Start over.

Learned after some trial and error and re-reading manuals. As mentioned before, turn off your antenna booster, then (and I have to do this on all my tv's), set it up for cable and scan the channels. This way, you have the available channels locked in. If you move to a new campground, you have to re-scan.

  • Make sure you turn off the roof top antenna amplifier if using cable.
