Not always, it depends on the particular hardware as well as what Android version you have.
As for the OP's question of whether a tablet can replace a laptop, I believe that has to be answered by each individual, there is no blanket answer. For me, the answer is an emphatic no, for someone else, the answer may very well be yes. It depends what it is you do with the laptop/tablet. The more of a content consumer you are the more likely a tablet will be able to completely fulfill your computing needs. - BumpyroadExplorerNO

- 1775ExplorerI have two tablets and we have a netbook and a laptop. The netbook and laptop, of course, do everything that our home desktop does. The tablets can do about 85% of what a computer can do - and that drops down to maybe 50% if you use specific software on your PC and want to use that on the road. The tablet has apps that mimic what the computer does but most do that in an abbreviated way. One thing that the tablets have over the laptop and the netbook is that they boot very quickly and you can be on and online (with wifi or cell data service if you have a 3G or 4G tablet) much faster than with a Windows PC. If you go with an Android tablet, many are USB capable and can connect to a usb keyboard or a usb hard drive or flash drive. Ipad cannot. The Android tablets are also capable of installing an extended memory SD card up to 64 gb - which an Ipad cannot - but that extended memory is only for data, music, video files, ebooks, and the like. You cannot install apps to the extended memory card on Android. Whether Ipad or Android you can use a bluetooth keyboard or other bluetooth connections which are recognized quickly and (on my two Android tablets) work well.
I take a tablet with us when traveling and my wife takes her Windows netbook. If I have to make changes to my blogsite I go for my wife's netbook as it is much easier to do this. If I need to copy a url and paste it somewhere I also use the netbook as the tablet can do this but not very easily. When I am using the tablet I often wonder why I just didn't get myself a netbook instead - but the tablet is a novelty and I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 with handwriting recognition and that was an appealing novelty also. But still the netbook is easier to use and has and can have anything we use at home. - deleted-2ExplorerI also found the the onscreen keyboards (swipe and tap) had a learning curve for me.
Gotta admit speech input works pretty dang good on these devices.
Speech sure speeds up web searching and chat.
Hard to use voice input with the wife around because she thinks I'm talking to her. - bcsdguyExplorer

Love the convenience of DW's Ipad, but hate the Ipad at the same time. Can't wait till I get my Asus TF701 tablet. BTW there is no need to type on the tablet. I bought DW a USB keyboard for her Ipad that works wonderfully. Light, easy to charge and type on. Add the fact it only cost me 20 dollars on Ebay and it is a win win. BTW her tablet does everything including the ability to pay bills on line. So in reality there is little reason to buy anything more. Especially since tablets are getting better each year.
I didn't think IPADs had usb ports. How do you use the usb keyboard on an IPAD? - RFCN2ExplorerInstall Ubantu Linux on your old laptop and you don't need to buy a new computer. I did that to an old Windows laptop and it worked like it was brand new.
I have all kinds of computers, Windows PCs 3, Apple Mac Book Pro, iPad, iPod touch, Android smartphone. If you need to do everything only a Windows PC is easy to do it all. But if you are going to mostly consume internet videos, you tube, a bit of emails, a tablet can work for you. I type well and bought a wireless keyboard for both my iPad and Android phone. What a waster of money. If you want to type easily get a laptop. BUT for RVing I LOVE a few tab apps. Like Allstays, Campwhere, any map based app. I find if much much easier to manipulate a map on a tablet.
So put Linus in your old computer to revive it and buy a tablet. I have had an iPad for about 2 1/2 years now and I think Apple makes a beautiful jewell like product. It also works really good too. My daughter has a little Nexus 7 small tablet that only cost 225 bucks. Really a nice little thing. You could try one of those. I am about ready to upgrade my tablet. I am going to sell my iPad 2 on ebay and buy a new iPad. I really love the Apple hardware. Their iTunes app on the iPad is great too. - MrWizardModeratorwe have TWO Android tablets
mine is a 10" Moto Xoom with updates, i use it for several hours EVERY morning
for email, news , and these forums, often for spur of the minute research on topics of conversation through out the day
hers is an 9" tablet with cover and keyboard
she uses it on&off all day long, and it gets a daily recharge - deleted-2ExplorerWe have three tablets 2 Andread and one Win8.
The tabs are used maybe around 10% of the time.
We have notebooks that are used constantly.
If you think you may love the tablet format imagine holding a 12-16 oz piece of glass up with one or both hands for 20 to 60 minutes.
Sit in your favorite spot with a book and look at how you hold it.
I spent money and time trying to turn my tablets back into laptops.
Look at the HP Envy line of smaller notebooks...you may be happier with something more familiar.
