CB ground plane in Class C-revisited

I installed a CB a 8-10 years back and ended up mounting the Firestick 2 foot antenna to the top of the ladder at he rear of my Class C. It was a problem trying to get a ground plane. The ladder is aluminum and a poor conductor plus it isn't attached to the frame for a ground. I ended up running a wire from the antenna bracket to each side of the side rain gutters. That seemed to give me a good match of less that 2:1 on all channels. I removed the radio 18 months ago and put in a Ham radio. I haven't had much success with it in the MH. It is good for scanning.
I swapped out the Ham radio for the CB. I still have all the coax and power under the passenger seat for the CB. I tried to get the match down below 3-3.5 with no luck. I checked all the connections and cleaned the ground wire atop the ladder going to the rain gutters. That improved it a little, but it's still around 3:1. There is a sheet of metal on the floor bottom running along the length of the MH to the engine compartment. Do you think running 8 or 10 wire from the antenna/coax connector to the frame or the metal floor protector would help?
We are going on a trip and I will need the CB more than the Ham Radio. Yes, I tried a No ground plane antenna with no luck. For some reason which I can't recall I switched it out to the Firestick.

  • I use a fender mounted CB antenna. It provides satisfactory performance and I didn't have any problem tuning the SWR.
  • I used a 10 inch, all-thread, feed through, bulk head connector. I run it through my frame rail. Thus a great ground. I mounted 5 hamstick antennas on a piece of angle iron and then grounded it to the rear ladder that I then grounded to the rear bumper.
I use an antenna analyzer to bring the antennas to resonance.

Same principals can be used for a single CB antenna.

  • A ground wire is not the same as a ground plane.

Yes you can use a hood/fender mount. Best to use on the left side as that would probably get you the best reception to other vehicles on the road. You will absolutely need the NGP antenna and NGP cable. Better yet mount to your 'glas cabover to get max range.
  • I have tried everything and can't get the match down below 3:1. Adjusting the tip just even them to 3.25:1. I tried using the ham radio coax, moving the ground cables around and still nothing makes it drop down to 2:1 or below.
Has anyone tried a driverside or passenger side hood mount? Does the cab over and a fiberglass hood mess it up?
  • The CB antenna was adjusted years ago atop the ladder and I am inside the cab when testing, no where near the antenna.
Going to try running a ground cable to the frame or house battery neg.
  • Read several times the tech pages here: Firestik tech

From limited info I would guess you don't have the no-ground-plane coax to go with your no-ground-plane antenna.
  • When checking the SWR, are you or who ever is adjusting the antenna, standing well away from the antenna?
