Cel phone for the winter only

We will be spending four months in the USA. What is the best (and the cheapest) cellphone that we could use there?

Thanks.

ps: I have a late model IPad with +3G. Would it help?

and as for your 3G on your ipad, I have that too, but opposite use. I live in U.S. and went to Canada. If i had used the data plan on my ipad it would have cost a fortune. You can't use your existing data plan at the same rate in a foreign country.Talk to your carrier and find out what it would cost to add a plan that includes the U.S. I just shut off my data and used wifi only.

  • Several users indicated that Tracphone is the way to go. On their webpage there are many phone models that they provide, including reconditioned ones. My experience with celphones is rather limited (we have at home the most basic - a ten years old model.)

Perhaps you could advice me on the model. Thanks.
  • When we go to Florida always get (or reactivate) our Tracfone. Works great and has a 1-800 toll free number to call Canada.

go to any taget, wal mart, k-mart, etc. and simply get a "burner" phone...a pay-as-you-go phone. it's a pay-as-you-go. most, like the one my bro-in-law bought for his visit here a few months ago, come with 'X' number of minutes good for 90-days.
  • One of the pay as hooky go plans would be cheaper fit basic phone service. I used net 10 from Wal-Mart for several years. Great nationwide coverage and cost was less than $20 a month. Have it up when I got the smart phone
  • get a Tracfone about $19.95, that comes with double minutes. buy a card with some minutes on it that will satisfy your immediate needs, when doubled. then sign up with their service protection plan for $5.99 per month to keep it active. then buy additional minutes as needed at sams/walmart, etc. this way your minutes do not expire.

  • You might try calling Cricket. They have some monthly plans that are pretty low cost.

  • Just go to Walmart and buy one of their Tracfone things and it's a done deal and you just throw the phone away when you are done with it... I think it was around $60 for the phone and 60 minutes of time.

You buy however many minutes you want, for as long as you want to keep buying them, but each block of minutes is only good for 90 days. So, if you buy 60 minutes it's good for 90 days. If you use your 60 minutes in 30 days and buy another 60 min, it's good for another 90 days.. If you buy 1000 minutes, you have to use it in 90 days or lose the balance..

You can even text and use the internet, but I think those eat into your minutes too? When I got a Tracfone before, I didn't care about the text/internet.. I just needed a temp phone for 90 days... (online add deal and didn't want to use my real phone number)..

You should check the coverage of course, but as I recall, it was as good as any of the major cell phone carriers..

    Good luck!

  • I just bought this one
The Lumia phones have downloadable maps that turn the phone into a turn by turn offline GPS.
I think it may work well for you while your here.
    It's no contract also.
  • Hi we are from Vancouver Island. We use Consumer Cellular. Bought the phone from Sears
in Bellingham. Thy have lots of plans and you can put the plan on hold at any time. We have had coverage all over the Us with no problems. Good luck
