If you care about the quality of the sound, don't bother with an FM modulator. Even the best ones cannot give you as good of quality as over the air FM stations. Moreover the bit rate equivalency is far lower than a CD or Flac file.
I'm not clear why the OP is set on keeping the stock unit. For $100 you can get something that's 10 times better and do everything you want. Give Crutchfield a call and ask some questions. You'll get real answers from someone who really knows what they are doing.
