Clock tells me to update in 6 days (Windows 10) or else

Looks like I'm now officially old school!! Windows 10 pop up says less then a week to opt in to a "free" version of Windows 10! But, this 5 yr. old p.c. might not be able to handle the strain and there'll be nothing more then a 'puff of smoke' - if I go for the free upgrade.

I'm tempted to risk the late entry fee - as given the age of my current laptop - it might need to be replaced; i.e. in the next few months, or so.

All recommendations and suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance
  • My 5 year old Toshiba Portege updated from Win 7 to Win 10 without a hitch. I tried Win 10 for a while and decided it offered nothing I needed and reverted to Win 7.

A note of caution, people have reported problems reverting to their previous version of Windows. What I do is periodically make an image (backup) of my system using Acronis TrueImage. If something goes wrong, this gives me an easy route to restore my PC to a known good backup.
  • ^^^^^^^^That's just silly. I have never had an Windows Update mess up anything on my computer, which is Windows 7. OTOH there are security updates that should be applied, but driver updates that shouldn't. I do all security and software updates but no driver updates. Never had an issue.
  • Real simple DISABLE 'automatic' updates. YOU are the master of your computer not them! :B

I don't let anything on my computer have access to automatic updates period. There is so much stuff within those updates that you don't even know about until its downloaded and screwing up something else on your computer.

My laptop is old I do not update anything!!! Because it always affects all your 'software that is older' too, usually rendering them dead. And just creates more problems. Remember These updates don't address or don't know what to do with older programs on your computer.

Just read all the posts of "I just updated x and now nothing else works correctly or not at all" posts right here on the forum!

I'm still running on Windows 7 and trust me no one out in internet land can just reach in and shut my laptop down because I won't update. :W
  • I have no intention of upgrading my laptop......EVER.
I'm getting too old to be screwing around with this c r a p.
  • Take a look here

I just set the ball rolling again in the above post. I should have searched better before I started that thread. Maybe reading the above will help you out too. I decided to NOT upgrade to Windows 10 until I replace my current laptop. Just my choice not intended as a recommendation for anyone else. DH loaded Windows 10 on his identical laptop, tried it for a couple days and then backed up to Windows 8.1. He didn't see a real difference and we like to keep both laptops the same to make it easier for us to move between the two as needed.
