Clock spring questions?

Hello
My dash airbag light went on a short awhile ago then slowly each steering wheel control went inop one by one incl the horn. Took it to Ford and they say it's a bad clock spring. What is the purpose of the clock spring (any pics?)? How much are they? What causes them to go bad? What's the typical life expectancy of them? I never heard of the, before.

Thanks
  • Thanks I now understand that it is a complex electrical connector. The term "clock" spring had me perplexed wondering what a clock and/or spring had to do with my steering wheel controls lol.

So is mines going out something to be expected or is it uncommon in these trucks?

Wcjeep The dealer will handle this repair.
  • Let the dealer complete the repair. Don't go cheap on the clock spring repair.
  • A clock spring has a ribbon of wire inside it that allows the steering wheel to be turned while still keeping contact with the connections. when a wire is flexed too many times it will break. they are a very common failure on some manuf. cars. I know for a fact Chrysler had many failures, and some were recalled! they are easy to replace. Disconnect the battery, remove the steering wheel, and the shroud around the column. and remove the clock spring. some are clipped in others are held in place with screws.

    Good luck!

They connect electricity to somethings that spin in a circle. (The steering wheel.)
    How much are they?
My buddies Chevy was like $200 bucks or around there IIRC.

They just do like anything else.

The life of the truck. It's rare but they do go out
I never heard of the, before.
