Had the same 2 problems, I put the nut on the base unit on the other side, just tighten it down and the head of the bolt will press into the plastic and you can get the power plug in.
I found that if you press the mode button and hold it for about 3 seconds it will work then hit it fast to get to the other screen, scroll up or down with the keys on the right of screen.
