does that have the same function as a dash cam that records continuously and when the SD card??? is full overwrites the old stuff? if not wouldn't work for me. does it put it on a SD card?

Yes! We installed an 8G micro SD card. It's good for about 6 hours.
Discovered by accident by pushing a button while in GPS mode.
but then you have to remove and erase and replace the card?? whereas I "assume" that a real dash camera continues to overwrite itself?

Assume away friend! It is not necessary to remove the card to erase the video of the days driving. One touch does that. 6 hours is way more than we usually drive anyway. No need to save the recording unless an incident occurs, images of the road are on Google anyway.
For the price of a "real" dash camera I'll gladly touch one key a day.
