I installed the App "Dailyroads Voyager" onto my Droid RAZR Maxx smartphone. I've been trying it for the last few days, and now I'm glad I didn't purchase a stand alone dashcam.
Here are some of the features that it has:
1. Videos can be set for user specified length. I selected four minutes each. They will loop over each other when the specified disk space fills up.
2. Videos are stored in the permanent file if the user pushes the screen during recording, or the phone senses an accident as determined by a preset "g" level. I selected 3 g's which is a pretty substantial hit.
3. You can display (or choose not to) the following attributes: Speed, latitude, longitude, elevation.
4. Video quality can be set. I chose 1080. Very good quality during daylight. Poor quality during sunset and sunrise if you have a bright sky and dark street. Good quality at night within the range of the headlights or other lighting.
5. During recording, you can hit the photo tab, and the app will save a copy of a photo to the memory card.
6. It will record in the background if you want to use the phone for other tasks such as GPS or linking with bluetooth to make a phone call.
I have one drawback I need to resolve. Due to the position of my windshield mount, I must mount the camera "upside down" or the mount gets in the picture. The phone flips the image, and it appears fine on the display. However, when I download the image to my PC, it is upside down. It is an MP4 image, so Windows Movie Maker won't work for editing and rotating the image. I need to download a conversion software package to convert the video to WMV format, then I can edit it in Move Maker. I'll try to solve this in the next few days.
