Dash Cam info: Looking at DOD LS460W, anyone have one?

I had a dash cam in my truck after being smoked by a drunk driver and doing $20,000 damage to my truck. I bought the thing from the local London Drugs store for $100.
It was a very poor quality piece of junk and it finally ceased to function.

I've been running without one now for a couple years and want to get a really good quality unit. Especially after the idiot in the Toyota pickup pulling a 20 foot TT tried to pass me and totally lost it and wiped out beside me. I had to drop 2 gears and stand on it to get out of his way so he didn't hit me.

I know there has been a lot of discussion here about them and various people like various units. Many folks have different opinions on what's best.

I found an awesome review site for comparisons.

Dashboardcamerareviews.com

(Sorry, my stupid iPad won't let me use the editor function and make this a clickable link)

This site rates the DOD LS460W as a top choice.
Does anyone here have this unit? I have arrived at it for my number 1 choice for my next dash cam.

Thanks.
  • I bought 4 Dash cam pros from E bay for 15.00 each w/free shipping. Although not called DCPro, it's the same one selling for 39.99 on an infomercial. They all work great!! I have one in my RV, Car and gave one to my daughter. One in the box. does not come w/SD card. up to 32G. Once in place, hands free, all automatic start and stop with ignition.
  • My wife nearly got wiped out by a drunk driver on Friday night, and should have had a dash cam, but it was in the house at the time. . i need to fix that today. She missed the head on collision by driving onto a curb at 40 MPH, we still have not taken the car to get the alignment checked (to busy this weekend), but know the house that the car pulled into that night and parked.

I have some what I might call 'disposable' dash cams. They are all less than $25 now on this website. In Russia, it is common to cause a accident to collect insurance money, and dash cams are used by most who own something expensive to save on insurance claims. I think they could become standard equipment in a couple of years on all new cars.

This $10 device does not have a internal battery, though you can buy one for it. It might not come with the memory card, but I just ordered some 32 GB cars for less than $9 each that are class 10 for a camera (10 MB per second). Class 6 is more than fast enough for a dash cam (6 MB per second transfer rate) and are a little less expensive.

I have a wired back up camera for my shuttle bus, and it has a built in front and remote camera. They both record to a 32 GB card in 5 minute files, each will over write a prior file if you run out of room. It's display and front camera strap to the rear view mirror. It is a 9" wide mirror with a 4.3" diagonal screen built in, that displays the rear view, or what has been recorded on the camera.

    This was $64.

I like that it is a wired camera, and leave it powered on all the time I am driving. There is a switch in the shuttle van to activate a relay controlling the interior lights and several circuit breakers, so I wired the camera to run from one of those circuits. I guess if plugged into a switched cigarette lighter, it will start automatically. It has a battery, and will turn itself on when the vehicle is moved (say a car hits it, or I open one of the doors) and will record a short time with it's internal battery.

I had to extend the wiring on my shuttle van, it is 23' long overall. By cutting the wire to the camera, I was able to drill a 3/16" hole through the back wall, and mount the camera, seal the hole, and it looks factory installed.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • Thanks for the thoughts and input. And the links Fred.

I had a cheap unit and it was very unsatisfactory.
The one I bought from London Drugs for $100. was troublesome from day one and the quality was so poor that you couldn't even read the licence plate on the car in front of me. Night time recording was nothing short of pathetically dismal at best.
Check it out in the link below. My scathing review is the second one down, posted by UncleBob

Once again this crummy iPad I'm using won't let me post a proper link. Don't feel like firing up my PC to do it properly.

So based on that I want a good quality unit that does what I buy it for. I do a lot of night driving so I need to be able to record events that I can actually see if I need to. I'm not afraid to spend a little more for a good unit.

I did my homework. I read a lot of reviews and checked things out thoroughly to make my choice.
I was just hoping someone had one of these things so they could give me a first hand report on it.

    Thanks guys! :)
  • Exact same as the one's I use, cheap, but works just fine. Ordered on E-bay from a US warehouse, received in 5 days $14.88

    Thanks Pete.
I was wanting to know how you found it for nighttime recording and detail and also how the detail and clarity was for things such as reading licence plates of vehicles.
And I guess the overall functionality of it.
  • Hi Bob, The DOD LS460W shines in the nighttime mode. I can see the license plates you mention with utmost clarity. Now that being said this is after you transfer the video to you computer. (BTW Free download software and it comes with the camera.) The only thing I found as a handicap is the battery time, It only last about 10 or 15 minutes when not plugged into a 12v source. But I always use it in my truck so no problem. If you need it to take a quick vid or a couple of still photos it would work on the batteries OK. As far as the functionality, It's easy once you read all the documentation and familiarize yourself with all the controls. Have you visited the DOD web site?
http://dod-tech.us/ Lots of info there. Bottom line I did a lot of research on dash cameras and I came up to this You pay for what you get. Stay away, Stay very far away from those super cheap Dash Cams.
    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the info Pete.
    This helps a lot.
I bought the DOD LS460W. It was rated at the top on the site I mentioned in the OP. And it was on sale for $100. off the regular price. I paid $229. Cdn$ for it.
I've never been afraid to pay more to get the better quality. I have always maintained the philosophy of an old expression I once heard:

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

And another one I have always liked is this:

If you want good quality oats you must be willing to pay a fair and reasonable price.
However, if you can be satisfied with oats that have already been through the horse, those come a little cheaper.

I bought a 64 gig card for it and tried it out today. So far I am really impressed with it. Hands down way better than that cheapo $100. London Drugs POS I bought a few years ago.

Still trying to figure out all the features and functions. A learning curve for sure.
But I like what I see so far.

I did visit the DOD website but didn't spend much time there. I will return to read more.
Not overly concerned about battery life as it will always be plugged in to my truck.
And yes, I stay very far away from those cheap units. I got bitten once, never again.
Interesting thing is that I did a ton of research and came up with this unit as you did.

Like you say, you get what you pay for.
Thanks for your input. It was very helpful.
