After reading several dash cam review web sites I learned there is no real consensus. Seems each site has their own set of criteria, or maybe their own agenda.
I recently bought a Cobra CDR895D. It is sort of mid price range at about $125 and the reviews I did find on it were good. It is relatively small and is hanging by suction cup mount just under my rear view mirror with very little visual impediment. Easy to detach. Resolution is very good. Has audio (some don't). Loop recording. Comes with a 16g memory card, but I replaced it with a 64g. You can disconnect power and continue to video, but not sure how long yet. It comes with a rear view camera also, but I am only using the front one. I don't know it is worth the effort to run a cable to the back for a rear view camera.
Have only had it a short time. Have not used it at night yet, so can't comment on night time video. But overall, looks promising. Not sure how a dash cam is going to help with your side mirrors though.
