Even though it is not necessary to see what is happening in front of you as you are driving, after all you should have the same view as the camera, I like some of the cameras or DVRs as they are also called with the 4" screen. My only problem is that they are very inexpensive or more accurately, CHEAP CRUD. So until I find one that really does work as advertised, I'll stick with my little $24.95 unit from eBay.
The extra features I like are the G Force stop and the motion detector. I use it as a trail cam in the campgrounds and roadside stops. The 140 to 170 degree lenses are nice but most of them have some fisheye distortion.
As far as the G Force stop, her is something to think about should you be involved in an accident that the camera catches and may help prove liability is, do you know your rights under the law. In California, the camera and the memory card are considered your personal property and cannot be confiscated without reason and any recording that may be subpoenaed, is restricted to thirty seconds before and thirty seconds after an incident. You are not required to provide the recording without the requestor obtaining a Court ordered subpoena. Another safe guard it that you do not have to provide any GPS reading or time stamp, our law say Video.
