Direct TV Satellite use for Dish?

I am in the process of moving from DTV to Dish, and I have a portable tripod dish that I use with my RV from DTV. Can that satellite dish be used with the Dish service box?

Two Answers, NO and 'Sort of'.

First the NO: DirecTV used a "Dual LNB" this means it can receive both clockwise and counter clockwise polarity at the same time, NOT Two LNBs (two LNBs is a Twin)
This is NOT what a dual LNB does. The single and dual LNB's receive both polarities but the single LNB has only 1 output and the dual LNB has 2 outputs.
It can receive ONE and only ONE satellite either DirecTV's 101, or one of the 3 that Dish uses (110,119,127)...129 actually Dish receivers are smart enough to figure it out and talk to it.. BUT... you won't be happy having to go out and aim it every time you change channels.

The newer SWM DirecHDTV antennas.. I'm not sure Dish can figure those out. Not sure? A Dish receiver would never work with a DirecTV SWM LNB.

A DISH Triple (3 LNBs) Dish type antenna can see all 3 Satellites at one time, and can feed
    1: receiver
1 (or more) Dual/Multi channel DVRs
    2 Or more Receivers
or a combination of Receivers and DVR's

Now... If you have a SINGLE receiver (IE: VIP-211) then a DOME type antenna (roof mounted or a portable "Cube" or Dome type antenna.. can (if it is the correct model) respond to the Receiver's request and see all 3 birds.... only one at a time.

I recommend the Triple Dish for best results but if you want an automatic antenna on the roof.> Well again the DISH 1000 works with multiple channel devices or multiple recivers.. Most any dome with a single VIP-211

NOTE Unless you buy your receiver at camping world or some such.
What does this mean. Nothing changes with Dish or DirecTV if you buy from Camping World or anyone else.

A standard DISH install INCLUDES a 1000.x Antenna (the x depends on where you live) and it will fit on your existing mount.. Just remove the DIRECTV antenna. Also DirecTV may ask for their LNB back.

  • Maybe not. My DirecTV HD antenna has a larger diameter hole so old SD round dish tripod will not fit? Ask for a short arm mast from installer and build yourself a 2x4 platform for it. Also an issue about SWM or B band converter.
  • For SD programing, the same dish and LNB will work on both services.
Or they used to, because I did it.
The manual single LNB crankup dishes that came standard on RVs in the late 90s for several years, would work on either service.
    Where is Bill ??
  • Check with the installer. They will likely be able to provide you with an antenna for use when you travel. It should mount right there on the same tripod you had your DTV antenna mounted on.
  • Thanks, I thought I would just check. They are coming to my house this AM to install it here. I don't use it much anyway. So we will see. I see a Dish HD dish with LNB for $25 on Craig's list today. Thanks again.

  • If you are getting it installed at your house, the tech will give you a second dish. He couldn't give me an LNB tho but I bought one on Ebay for $15.

Treat yourself, buy a Winegard Pathway X2 carryout auto dome. It does HD and can find eastern arc or western arc. About $400.
  • We did the same a few times switching between the two sat services, didn't bother trying to use or convert the existing sat dish since we could purchase one cheap on Ebay or from other online retailers. We are currently utilizing Dish network for our satellite TV needs and picked up a new HD sat dish online for less than $50 delivered to our front door. Just a heads up that acquiring all 3 satellites with Dish network programming requires a bit more precision, starting out with a truly plumb mast makes the process less tasking. With Directv, as long as the mast was somewhat plumb it is relatively easy to dial in all three satellites.
  • No. Technically the tin dish can be used. But you will need a different arm and LNB.
