I have a Wineguard carry-out satellite dish and am needing to buy a direct-tv receiver for a second connection to the bedroom. SD is fine and don't need DVR but would be nice to have. Can anyone tell me the models I should be looking to buy second hand that will work with this setup.
Thanks.
I think it's me! Mr. Satellite!
You will be able to use any of the DirecTV receivers with a model number of H24 or lower. If you want a DVR then I would buy an HR24. The only reason you would need the SWM hardware is if you REALLY wanted a DVR. The Genie allows you to watch and record up to 5 channels simultaneously (in SD only with a dome). The SWM hardware costs around $100 and is simple to self-install.
The additional advantage of SWM is that only one coax from the Carryout to the receiver would be required to power a DVR. Without SWM, if you want to use a DVR you must run both coax cables from the Carryout to the DVR.
