Direct TV

New to full timing, we have two receivers one of them able to record, and has two tuners. I set it up with only one tuner active and have problems when it comes to recording and watching at the same time. I set it up that way because Direct TV informed me that I needed to run a separate cable from the antenna to the receiver for it to work. Now my question, instead of running a cable all the way from the antenna, what if I installed a spliter and connected to both "cable in" ports on the back of the unit? Would I then be able to activate the second runner and be able to watch a different channel than I am recording? What type of spliter would do the trick? Thanks!

Just a reminder that he needs two of the 6" cables, not one.

You can add a SWM8 switch and a PI29 power inserter to your setup for less than $100. This will allow you to run 1 cable to the DVR and utilize both tuners. You could also add a SWM splitter and run the DVR and the 2nd receiver if you like.

But you would still have to run 2 coax cables from the antenna to the SWM8.

Yep, but I don't think 6" of coax out at the antenna is going to get in anyone's way.

  • You would need a 2 to 4 multiswitch. Takes 2 connections from the antenna and turns it into 4 connections so you could run 2 to your DVR and one to the other receiver. I have one kicking around in the garage, but it has been a couple years since I last saw it. Try eBay or Amazon.

There is a device called a switch, but with just two receivers it's a lost cause.. (It would be needed if you had more receivers)

Not that hard to run a 2nd cable. Odds are you can do it without drilling anything.
  • DTV was correct. You need 2 cables from satellite to watch and record. NO SPITTERS . UNLESS you have a SWM Satellite, then you can use 1(one) cable from the satellite to Box.
